10th Africa Regional Conference
31 countries meet in Nigeria to grow Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting in Africa
From 11 to 17 August 2013, Girl Scout and Girl Guide organizations from 31 countries met in Nigeria at the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) 10th Africa Regional Conference.
With the theme of "African Young Women: Soaring Towards Excellence," more than 120 delegates agreed on how to grow Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting in the region to girls and young women, giving more girls in more countries the opportunity to develop their self-esteem, leadership skills and make a difference in their communities on issues such as sustainability, ending violence against girls and gender empowerment and equality.
The week-long conference included workshops, consultations, showcasing of projects by Member Organizations, the election of the Africa Committee members and the bid for the venue of the next Conference. The delegates discussed topics important to the global Movement and to girls in their own countries, including eliminating violence against girls and women, global leadership, girls’ education, fund raising and membership growth.
