As part of the implementation of one of the WAGGGS goals which is leadership development, Malawi Girl Guides held a training of trainers under the Gold project with Girlguiding UK which took place in August 2010. Gold project is run by the Girlguiding UK. Member Organizations initiate the project by writing a proposal to Girlguiding UK.
In Malawi the main purpose of the training was to train national trainers in camping skills, patrol system and other relevant topics for them to attain an Advanced Certificate in guiding; to train leaders and patrol leaders on aspects of guiding development for them to be able to run a unit successfully and implement some of the activities like camping and the like. Under the Gold Project, the following have been trained in various skills: 25 National Trainers, 25 Guide Leaders in the Northen Region, 25 patrol leaders in the Northern Region and 17 young leaders in the Central Region.
Lexa Kaipa a National young leader notes “I have learnt a lot of things from this training especially about camping it was exciting”.
The training took place in all the three regions of Malawi. But the climax was the one that took place in Lilongwe at Chimutu Primary school which is in the Central Region. As Malawi Girl Guides Association, we cerebrated the victory of having one of our members elected onto the Africa Region Committee. The celebration was done together with the Girlguiding UK.
There may be some other Associations which are struggling to implement their training activities. Try Gold project. You do not need a lot of funds. You can achieve a lot with the little resources that you have. It has worked for Malawi. With little resources we have trained a lot of people.
